Israeli archeologists inspecting ongoing unauthorised Muslim excavations on Temple Mount this month discovered dating to the First Temple.
During a visit to the Muslim-occupied and controlled holy hill, archeologists examined a deep gash the Muslims had cut into the floor of the compound, revealing a layer of remains they were able to positively date to the eighth to sixth centuries BC.
The artifacts included fragments of bowls decorated in a style characteristic of the First Temple period, jars for the storage of oil and jugs used to ladle the oil during religious ceremonies.
Muslim officials at the site continue to insist that an Israeli temple never sat on Temple Mount and that the Jews have no legitimate historical connection to the area.
Former Palestinian Authority-appointed Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Ikrema Sabri, said, ‘There is no proof that there was ever a Temple.’ Sabri brushed aside decades of archeological finds, as well as numerous extra-biblical historical writings that attest to the ancient Jewish temple, to make his claim. Putting forward the equally-incredible claim that Islam does not overrun and appropriate the holy sites of other religions, Sabri stated that if the Jews ever want peace with the Muslim world, they will drop what he insists is a false claim to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.
