Dating Sites News & Commentary

My husband and I visited a friend who is recently divorced. He invited us upstairs to look at some pictures, but my husband found something more interesting. He had a personality profile and compatibility print-out from eHarmony.com. Tonight I saw a commercial for this online dating service. The audience is people who are searching for love. The commercial appeals to emotion because it gives hope to people who think they have lost at love by giving them a second chance to find it. The website offers new members a chance to review matches for free. It peaks curiosity because people want to know if their true love is waiting for them just a few clicks away. The commercial appeals to logic because it seems like there is nothing to lose. You can sign up, take a personality test, and then eHarmony does the rest. It is much faster to match compatibility scores and receive instant feedback than to go talk to people the old-fashioned way. The site helps customers find people with common interests and similar personalities so they have something to build a relationship on. The commercial is sufficient in explaining the purpose of the service. It could go into more detail about price and the rate of success. The argument is typical for its audience. People who are searching for love need to find ways to connect with potential love interests. The commercial didn’t have any information about success rates, so it’s hard to know whether it’s accurate or not. The topic is relevant in today’s society because there is a huge divorce rate and people want to make sure that their love will last. I think the commercial is appropriate for its audience. It should at least motivate them to go to the website to find out more about the service.

Dh is off to work overtime, and the children are supposed to be peacefully napping….hmm maybe they are not all napping, but at least for the moment they are quiet :p

I am quite happy I got to sleep in, given the week I have had, I really needed the refreshment. Tonight I need to go buy some candy for the kids’ parties at school.

I know I know, this will be the second year that we will not be taking the little ones Trick or Treating, and personally I hate the idea of any kind of “party”. We are still trying to transition our lives to be more focused on God, and this is an area where dh and I are not in total agreement on how things should be, since we are both pretty torn since we were raised celebrating the commercial holidays. But we both agree that this is a very different world that we live in now, and at the very least it is not safe for kids to go door to door. Our church is having a carnival on Wednesday, but I didn’t think it would be right to send our kids, being as they would not be dressed up, and I didn’t want them to be made fun of. I was planning on next weekend having a movie night, with popcorn, games, and making caramel apples, to celebrate the coming of fall. We shall see if the kids behave so we can do that… On Wednesday night we will be going to mom’s for dinner and treats for the kids (I think she said something about candy bags), so they will get to do something.James was having a fit about not getting to go trick or treating this year, he doesn’t really understand, nor does he care why we don’t do it. I am praying for wisdom with that situation.

This week we have been slowly implementing the new chore chart, not really making the kids do it 100%, but trying to get them familiar with it. I think its time to crack down, and start being a little stricter with it. They need the routine and responsibility, and it will help me out tremendously. After they get it down, slowly I will add things here and there. Our goal is to have them do this with out fighting and arguing, and to get them to do this with little reminders. These chores, will help break this cycle of laziness that has dominated our (dh and I’s) lives since childhood (we have things we have to do too ) I know we have to enforce this more, especially with my goals to homeschool. They will simply not play all day after school work is done, they need to work too, they need to learn things that I was too lazy to learn as a child.

I want them to learn to be self sufficient, they need to know how to grow their own food, how to wash clothes (what if the washing machine breaks when they are adults? will they know how to wash clothes in a bath tub when necessary??), the girls should know at least some basic sewing, all the kids need to know that the home should be the source of meals, not McDonald’s! Do you catch what I mean? I was blessed with a mom who made an effort to cook more than eat out, and a dad who could work on cars and make things out of wood, they both have at least some knowledge of gardening, mom and my stepmother both have some knowledge of canning. Dad and stepmom raised few cows for meat, and chickens too. I am sorry I did not take an interest when they were doing those things when I was a teen, how much easier would it have been to absorb a lot more of the knowledge! At least they are still around so I can now ask them about it I think these things are important for our children to know, that way if they are struggling financially, they can save money and do things themselves. And the truly beautiful thing, is that we will all learn this side-by-side, learning from our mistakes and our successes.

It really disturbs me that so many people our age have no clue how to garden, cook or fix things themselves. Everything is disposable, just buy a new one. Everyone is too busy to garden, so they hire people to do that for them. Oh, vegetables come from the produce section….now where is that? and what do fresh veggies even look like? If the washing machine breaks, lets buy a new one or just go to the laundromat. Its just sickening at times. Another trend we have noticed is all these farmers selling their land to developers. Its so sad. Absolutely gorgeous land, acres and acres of nature…my heart screams “Give that to US! Let us cherish that gift from God” Oh, just seeing neighborhoods go up, with yards barely big enough to stretch your arms…its so sad…

Back to homeschooling, I have been praying a lot lately about it. We are actually listening to a cd seminar by Gregg Harris . So far, it’s been wonderful. He is a great speaker, and sounds like he has a lot of knowledge to offer. Apparently he’s well known in the Christian homeschooling crowd. And little did I know that his children are people I have heard about! Josh Harris wrote “I Dating Goodbye” (a book I want to read), Alex and Brett Harris started The Rebelution (the modesty survey was totally awesome!), and some of his other children have websites/blogs (see the link to Gregg’s main site, links are on the right side of the blog). I commented, how awesome would it to be to raise our children to do such work for God! Anyway, if you want a copy of his seminars (there are several) then you should check out his site above. I got my copy of the homeschooling seminar (I donated money to cover shipping) and plan on getting the family business seminar soon from Charity Ministries. I highly recommend the homeschooling seminar to those thinking about it….

So before I close, other happenings….I ordered a cute set of cups and saucers, but fed-ex delivered them to the wrong house I never got them, even though they supposedly delivered it on a day that we were all home! grrr… thankfully the seller did promptly refund my money, and I would probably buy from her again, since this was clearly a problem with the shipping company. I am a little disappointed, because it was a Corelle set in the pattern Strawberry Sundae. I want to build a collection of that pattern, since Corelle is a sturdy brand, and the pattern matches the strawberry pattern for my kitchen (and I found those 3 plates at a thrift shop as mentioned in a previous post). It reminds me of my mom’s kitchen when I was very young.

While I was thinking about my future home, and my strawberry kitchen, I have decided instead of have a “strawberry everything”, I would use items like solid color or gingham linens (in red or green) and use ruby red depression glass. The depression glass is absolutely beautiful!! I like the ones that are a true red (no yellow) and that are not “pearlized”. Ebay and antique stores are chock full of the stuff! I can’t wait to start hunting the antique and thrift shops I kind of want to wait until we get our home so I will be less likely to break it trying to store it away:)
